"Vinayaka Chaturthi" or "Ganesh Chaturthi" is the festival that celebrates the birthday of the Hindu Diety, Lord Ganesha in India.
This year the festival is celebrated on 1st September 2011 in Maharashtra and most North Indian States. Its also a very famous festival in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Tamilnadu, Karnataka and Goa.
Vinayaka Chaturthi festival is observed in the Hindu calendar month of Bhadra. It starts on Shukla Chaturthi and ends with Ananta Chaturdashi(According to the Indian Astrology). Lord Vinayaka(Ganesha) is the son of Shiva and Parvati.
Vinayaka Chaturthi Festival is usually celebrated with clay Idol of Lord Vinayagar, which is made 2-3 months prior of Vinayaka Chaturthi. The Vinayagar Idols are installed in home and street corners and are used for Pooja(prayers).Vinayagar idol is anointed with sandal paste for the poojas.
On the 11th day of the festival, Vinayagar idols are carried throughout the streets in a procession with dance and songs to be eventually immersed in sea/river/well at the end of the festival processions.
The elephant headed deity, Ganesha is highly regarded as the Supreme God of wisdom, prosperity and good fortune, among Hindus in India. According to the believers, praying to Lord Ganesh during the festival will bring good luck and prosperity for the family.
